The Jericho Underhill Land Trust is comprised of hundreds of members in our community and beyond. Over the past five years, more than one-third of the households in Jericho and Underhill contributed to the following projects. Local businesses, artists, conservation and historical organizations, as well as foundations, have been instrumental in accomplishing this work.
Casey’s Hill: In 2005, JULT raised $245,000 to purchase a famous winter sliding hill for the Town of Underhill. The Town contributed $20,000 and donated a conservation easement on this property to the Vermont Land Trust. This collaboration between land trusts and the community ensure that children will continue to enjoy winter sliding for generations to come.
Kikas Valley Farm: JULT received 280 acres of working farm land and forest from the Snyder Companies in 2005. Our land trust donated a conservation easement to the Vermont Land Trust. Over 75 acres is leased to local farmer Paul Mazza for fruit and vegetable growing. Pedestrian trails are enjoyed year round, along with a VAST trail during the winter. This property offers a spectacular view of Mt. Mansfield and Camels Hump and is found just off Skunk Hollow Rd. on Tyler Place in Jericho. To access, please use the small parking area with the split rail fence just before the first Wingate development house on the left.
Private conservation easement donation: In 2006, The Northrop family donated a conservation easement on 280 acres of scenic meadow and working forest thereby permanently protecting this area for generations to come. JULT assisted with this transaction and the Vermont Land Trust holds the easement.
Mills Riverside Park: The Jericho Underhill Land Trust is best known for its establishment of the Mills Riverside Park in 1999. The Park is centrally located, behind two schools and the town library, and is comprised of 216 acres, including 83 acres of open meadowland and 133 acres of forested hillside terrain. This land provides both wildlife habitat and a wonderful vista of Mt. Mansfield. Today the Park is home to a weekly farmer’s market, music and sports events, and educational projects, as well as serving as a quiet retreat. The Mills Riverside Park is owned and managed by the Jericho Underhill Park District. The Vermont Land Trust holds the conservation easement.
Old Mill Park: In 1991, JULT was instrumental in creating the 12 acre Old Mill Park, which is adjacent to the historic Old Red Mill. Today the park is owned and managed by the Winooski Valley Park District and offers picnicking, hiking, & cross-country skiing on trails that wind along the Browns River.
Private Conservation Easement Donation: In 2000, JULT conserved 165 acres of critical wildlife habitat for black bear, moose & bobcat in Jericho, through a generous conservation easement donation.
Wolfrun Natural Area: On July 16, 2003 Jericho Underhill Land Trust acquired the 279 acre Wolfrun Natural Area after a year and a half of intensive fund raising and widespread community involvement and support. The Wolfrun Natural Area encompasses remote cliffs, dense forest and pristine wetland. It is home to black bear, moose, bobcat and many other wildlife species. This is the first purchase of land that we continue to own, bringing JULT into a whole new chapter of land stewardship. Vermont Land Trust holds the conservation easement. JULT is responsible for the day to day management of this biologically rich area.
